Exploring the Future of ESports - A Day at Cal State University Dominguez Hills and Battleground VR
This spring, a group of 20 excited ESports enthusiasts from Scholarship Prep South Bay embarked on a journey to explore the vast opportunities that the world of gaming and technology has to offer. Led by our dedicated School Counselor, Mr. Castillo, these students from grades 6 to 8 had the unique experience of touring Cal State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) and engaging with cutting-edge VR technology at Battleground VR.
A Vision Realized: The ESports Program at Scholarship Prep South Bay
As the initial co-founder of our ESports program, Mr. Castillo had a clear vision: to expose students to the multifaceted opportunities within the ESports industry, both academically and career-wise. This field trip was the culmination of his efforts to intertwine education with real-world applications. Prior to the trip, Mr. Castillo prepared the students with a comprehensive presentation covering the history of ESports, various career paths in game design, and insights into prominent programs like USC’s Interactive Media & Game Design and CSUDH’s ESports offerings.
Immersive Learning at Battleground VR
The first stop was Battleground VR, a state-of-the-art virtual gaming facility. Here, students delved into the intricacies of VR technology. They learned about the mathematical and technological components that make VR experiences possible and the psychology behind creating immersive environments. The highlight of this visit was undoubtedly the VR rollercoaster experience, where students felt the thrill of a real rollercoaster ride through the clever use of sensory inputs like movement and wind.
Exploring Academic and Career Paths at CSUDH
The journey continued at Cal State University Dominguez, where students not only toured the campus but also got an insider’s look at the ESports Program and Facility. They discovered the array of technology available to CSUDH students, including gaming setups, video production tools, live streaming equipment, and coding software. This hands-on exposure gave our students a glimpse into the potential academic paths and career opportunities within the ESports realm.
A Bright Future for ESports at Scholarship Prep South Bay
At Scholarship Prep, we believe in exposing our students to pathways toward scholarships and the vast possibilities that await them in college and their future careers. The field trip was a testament to the exciting opportunities available and the importance of early exposure to these fields. For those interested in joining the ESports program at Scholarship Prep South Bay, the club is open to students in grades 6 through 8. Matches are held after school from Monday to Thursday, with competitions against other middle schools both within and outside the state. Students can sign up for the program, provided they meet academic and behavioral expectations, ensuring that our ESports community remains a space of excellence and good character.
