From Our Classrooms to California: What Whole-Child Support Looks Like at Scholarship Prep

Every morning, before the first lesson begins, something important happens in Scholarship Prep classrooms across Southern California. Teachers greet Scholars by name at the door. Students settle in. And Morning Meeting begins.

It's not a warm-up or a transition ritual. Morning Meeting is intentional, daily, designated time for social-emotional learning, built into every classroom at every campus. It's one of the most consistent things we do, and that consistency is the point.

This is the work that Kristen Crowe, Scholarship Prep's Chief Community Officer, brought to two statewide stages this year. At the CCSA Charter Schools Conference in Long Beach, she co-presented with partners at Sown to Grow on "From Connection to Action: Tiered Strategies for Whole-Child Support," exploring how schools can move from building relationships with students to building systems that act on them. And at the California Statewide Homeless Education Conference in San Diego, she joined a plenary panel of McKinney-Vento liaisons to share what it looks like to build trust with families experiencing homelessness from the ground up, starting small, staying consistent, and centering the needs of the community every step of the way.

Both conversations pointed back to the same foundation.

The core message was one our staff lives out daily: creating a schoolwide environment where Scholars feel heard, supported, and like they truly belong is possible. Not as an aspiration. As a practice.

"Our SEL and McKinney-Vento work at Scholarship Prep is intentional and meaningful," Kristen shared. "It's not about checking a box. It's about understanding the needs of our students and our community and building systems that support them."

Those systems look like Morning Meeting. They look like the weekly check-ins our teachers facilitate through Sown to Grow's platform, where students share how they're doing in response to a prompt, and teachers and school counselors review every response together. A student shares something concerning, and a flag goes up. A counselor follows up. Support reaches the Scholars who need it, not just the ones who ask for it.

After each session, the schools in the room wanted to know how Scholarship Prep brings an entire network of schools along on this work. Kristen pointed to transparency.

"When people understand the 'why,'" she said, "the work becomes meaningful. It's no longer about checking a box, but about supporting students in a genuine and impactful way."

That's what our teachers carry into Morning Meeting every single day. Not because it's required, but because they understand what's at stake for the Scholars walking through their doors.

What starts in that circle at the top of the day ripples out. It shows up in how Scholars handle conflict, how they ask for help, and how they build trust with the adults around them. The work is daily. The impact is forever.
